Being a mid-round college draft pick in Extended Spring Training the following year can still make a pitcher a bit antsy. (Windows Media Player recommended for listening.)
Say hello to Jayson Ruhlman, the Cubs' 23rd-round selection from Central Michigan University last June. Ruhlman signed with the Cubs toward the end of August and missed out on the opportunity to make his professional debut a season ago.
The left-hander struck out 99 in 86 innings for the Chippewas in 2005. He was originally drafted out of high school by the White Sox in the 12th round and signed with the Cubs despite two years of eligibility left in college.
He hopes to get a call up to one of the Cubs' short- or full-season affiliates soon.
