Peoria Drops Playoff Opener

Beloit, WI – The Peoria Chiefs got a solid outing from ace Mitch Atkins Wednesday night but he was outdone by Snappers starter Yohan Pino who tossed a 2-0 shutout as Beloit took game one of the Best-of-3 first round series.

Peoria's Mitch Atkins and Beloit's Yohan Pino battled scoreless into the bottom of the sixth inning surrendering just a combined six hits. Beloit started the sixth with a leadoff single from William Luque. Atkins then got Matt Betsill and Dwayne White to pop up to shortstop for two quick outs. With a 3-1 count, Eli Tintor crushed a two-run homer of the left field wall for a 2-0 Beloit lead.

Peoria's first chance came in the fifth inning against Pino. Ryan Norwood led off with a single to left-center and with one out Kyle Reynolds dropped a single into center. But Pino rallied to strike out Yusuf Carter swinging and Mark Reed looking to end the rally.

Atkins (0-1) lasted six innings allowing just two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three. The only Beloit runs against Atkins came on the two-run homer off the bat of Tintor. Justin Rayborn tossed two shutout innings allowing one walk with one strikeout out of the Chiefs bullpen.

Pino (1-0) shut the Chiefs out through nine innings allowing just four hits while striking out six. The right-hander who was 14-2 in the regular season threw 99 pitches for his first career complete game.

– Atkins blanked Beloit through five and made just one mistake in the game. The ace matched Pino early and finished with three strikeouts and no run support.

Notes ... Tintor hit a walk off homer against Peoria on Saturday... The two teams split the regular season series 8-8 with Peoria going 5-1 at home... Game two is Thursday night at O'Brien Field at 6:30 PM... The Chiefs will send RH Scott Taylor (8-8) to the mound against RH Eddie Morlan (5-5)... Taylor was 1-0 in three starts against the Snappers this season while Morlan threw just 1 1/3 innings of relief against the Chiefs in 2006... The broadcast begins with the pre-game show on at 6:15 PM.
