Cubs Send Pawelek Back to 'Extended'

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced their first roster move of the 2007 season. LHP Mark Pawelek has been designated to extended spring training at the Cubs facility in Mesa, Arizona while RHP Jake Renshaw will come from Mesa to Peoria.

Pawelek, a former first round pick in 2005, made two appearances out of the bullpen for the Chiefs where he worked four innings and allowed two runs while walking four batters. Pawelek last pitched on Sunday, April 15 against Quad Cities allowing two runs over two innings of work. He was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA so far in 2007.

Mark was chosen by the Cubs in the 1st round of the 2005 draft and spent most of the '05 season in Mesa and all of the 2006 season as a starter for Boise. He is the highest drafted player in Utah high school history. Pawelek was selected by Baseball America as the 10th best prospect in the Cubs organization for 2007.

Renshaw, a 10th round pick in the 2006 draft will be added the Peoria staff and is expected to meet the team Tuesday in Midland, Michigan for their four game set with he Great Lakes Loons. Renshaw, who turns 21 on April 29 made five starts in Boise in 2006.

He went 1-3 with a 4.24 ERA while striking out 20 and walking just six in 23.1 innings pitched. Renshaw was also 0-1 with a 5.57 ERA in seven games and six starts last season with Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League before his promotion to Boise.

Before being selected by the Cubs last year he attended Ventura Junior College in Ventura California.
