Cubs 2007 Prospect Power Rankings: Week 2

Special consideration is given for the past week's action, which can wreck havoc on the lists from update to update. Rankings, however, are primarily compiled on an overall season-to-date basis. Statistics updated through April 22.

1. Micah Hoffpauir: 1B, Iowa (Triple-A)
.369, 4 HR, 7 2B, 23 RBI, .411 OBP

His 12-game hitting streak recently came to a close, but the 27-year-old continues to rack up the RBIs. He has almost as many home runs as strikeouts (five).

2. Carlos Marmol: SP, Iowa
2-0, 1.65 ERA, 16.1 IP, 24 K, 4 BB, .183 AVG

The right-hander began the year at Triple-A wanting to get his fastball over for strikes after walking as many batters (59) as he struck out in Chicago last year. The work has paid off thus far.

3. Mark Holliman: SP, Tennessee (Double-A)
2-0, 0.00 ERA, 21 IP, 16 K, 3 BB, .184 AVG

The 2005 third-round pick makes the biggest jump this week after throwing 15 shutout innings last week en route to the Southern League's Pitcher of the Week Award.

4. Mitch Atkins: SP, Daytona (Class High-A)
1-1, 1.69 ERA, 16 IP, 14 K, 4 BB, .148 AVG

The Cubs' minor league wins leader from a season ago hasn't gone very deep in many games thus far in '07, but his average against is the lowest of any starter in the farm system.

5. Billy Muldowney: SP, Peoria (Class Mid-A)
2-1, 3.32 ERA, 19 IP, 21 K, 4 BB, .288 AVG

Last year's eighth-round pick is likely to drop since he was placed on the disabled list Monday following his most recent start over the weekend. In three starts previously, though, he struck out 20 in 17 innings while walking just two.

6. Matt Matulia: SS, Daytona
.356, 0 HR, 9 RBI, .415 OBP

After making the jump from short-season A-ball straight to High-A, he's racked up eight two-hit performances in his 16 games thus far, and has reached base safely in all but one game.

7. Les Walrond: SP, Iowa
2-0, 1.06 ERA, 17 IP, 10 K, 3 BB, .179 AVG

The 30-year-old left-hander enters the week with the second best ERA for any starter in the Cubs' system and has gone the deepest into games for his team.

8. Sean Gallagher: SP, Tennessee
2-1, 3.12 ERA, 17.1 IP, 17 K, 5 BB, .206 AVG

Always a popular presence in our rankings, he struck out a season-high eight and scattered two runs across 6 2/3 innings in his most recent start. He enters the week with the third most strikeouts in the Cubs' farm system after finishing second in that category last season.

9. Matt Craig: 3B, Tennessee
.361, 1 HR, 4 2B, 6 RBI, .410 OBP

The infielder was slugging .556 before going on the DL with a thigh-related injury following a collision at home plate on Friday.

10. Chris Walker: CF, Tennessee
.345, 2 HR, 2 2B, 9 RBI, .387 OBP

A nine-game hitting streak, in which he batted .447 and had seven multi-hit games, bumps him into the top 10.

Honorable Mentions

Felix Pie (OF, Chicago) : The crown jewel's first big league promotion exempts him from this week's list.

Scott Moore (3B/LF, Iowa) : His 13 RBIs are the second most in the farm system entering the week, but his .218 average through 18 games is well below par.

Jeff Samardzija (SP, Daytona): Still looking for his first win after allowing as many hits as innings pitched (15).

Matt Avery (CP, Daytona): Enters the week with four straight saves.

Tyler Colvin (OF, Daytona): For someone who made the jump from short-season to Advanced A, last year's first-round pick is batting a respectable .280 entering the week. But his on-base percentage is hovering around the .300 mark.
