Class-A Daytona shortstop Matt Matulia is enjoying a nice homecoming of sorts in the Florida State League. Through his first 16 games this season, the 22-year-old Eustis, Fla., native was batting .356 and had reached base safely in all but one game.
Matulia graduated from Eustis High School, about an hour south of Daytona Beach. He was one of three players to make the jump from short-season Low-A ball in Boise last season to Advanced-A Daytona to begin 2007.
Getting a chance to begin the year in Daytona was a welcome surprise for the Cubs 24th round draft pick a season ago from The Citadel.
