Prospect Power Rankings: Week 3

(Editor's Note: Special consideration is given for the past week's action, which can wreck havoc on the lists from update to update. Rankings, however, are primarily compiled on an overall season-to-date basis. Statistics updated through April 30.)

1. Mark Holliman: SP, Tennessee (Double-A)
3-0, 0.33 ERA, 27 IP, 22 K, 5 BB, .200 AVG
Previous High: Third.

Holliman becomes the first pitcher to occupy the top spot in our rankings this season, as he has turned in a quality start in all four of his outings thus far, and only recently yielded his first earned run of 2007.

2. Mitch Atkins: SP, Daytona (Class High-A)
2-1, 2.14 ERA, 21 IP, 17 K, 5 BB, .181 AVG
Highest Ranking: Second.

The right-hander allowed a season-high five hits in his most recent start, but still picked up the win. His .148 average against in his first three starts was the lowest in the Cubs' farm system.

3. Micah Hoffpauir: 1B, Iowa (Triple-A)
.322 AVG, 4 HR, 25 RBI, .374 OBP
Highest Ranking: First.

A recent 0-for-13 skid dropped his average down from over the .400 mark. He enters play Tuesday, though, with a hit in each of his last four games. He is still pacing the rest of the system in run production.

4. Tyler Colvin: OF, Daytona
.329 AVG, 1 HR, 14 RBI, .367 OBP
Highest Ranking: Fourth.

Last year's first-round pick makes the biggest jump up from last week. He has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games to bring his average from .280 to .329. One-third of his first 24 hits this season have gone for doubles.

5. Carlos Marmol: SP, Iowa
2-1, 4.05 ERA, 26.2 IP, 30 K, 11 BB, .216 AVG
Highest Ranking: Second.

Power-pitching righty is coming off back-to-back subpar outings, in which his ERA has climbed almost two and a half points. He still leads the farm system in strikeouts, though.

6. Josh Kroeger: OF, Tennessee
.397 AVG, 2 HR, 12 RBI, .413 OBP
Highest Ranking: Sixth.

Kroeger is a former Arizona Diamondbacks farm hand that's done nothing else but hit since signing with the Cubs last off-season. His .397 average leads the farm system, even if he hasn't showcased much "power" power.

7. Chris Walker: OF, Iowa
.333 AVG, 3 HR, 15 RBI, .408 OBP
Highest Rankings: Seventh.

No slowing down following a promotion to Triple-A, where he's gone 6-for-13 in his first three games.

8. Jake Fox: C/OF/INF, Tennessee
.316 AVG, 4 HR, 16 RBI, .338 OBP
Highest Ranking: Eighth.

Fox has a hit in 10 of his last 11 starts and has played five different positions to boot.

9. Matt Matulia: SS, Daytona
.323 AVG, 0 HR, 13 RBI, .382 OBP
Highest Ranking: Sixth.

One of Daytona's top hitters had another overly strong week recently. He entered play Monday one behind Milwaukee Brewers prospect Chris Errecart for the most hits in the Florida State League with 30.

10. Rocky Roquet: CP, Peoria (Class Mid-A)
0-0, 0.00 ERA, 10.2 IP, 12 K, 4 BB, .200 AVG, 5 SV
Highest Ranking: 10th.

The hard-throwing righty has five saves in his first eight appearances.

Honorable Mentions

Mike Fontenot (INF, Iowa) : Don't look now, but the little guy had four home runs in the first month. This is now his fourth straight season at Triple-A, and judging by the numbers, we wonder if it's not two or three seasons too long a stay.

Jeff Samardzija (SP, Daytona) : Hasn't been overpowering through five starts, or even overly dominant. But he's yielded no more than two earned runs in any of his five 5-inning performances thus far.

Rafael Dolis (SP, Peoria) : One of the Cubs' better signings from the Dominican Republic circa 2004, the right-hander has a 2.25 ERA and 15 hits allowed through 20 innings.
