Petrick back up; Cherry to DL

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Rocky Cherry on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain. Due to the injury, the Cubs have recalled right-handed pitcher Billy Petrick, who was optioned yesterday, from Triple-A Iowa.

Petrick, 23, was originally recalled from Double-A Tennessee June 26 and made his major league debut the following day vs. Colorado, tossing a scoreless seventh inning before allowing two runs in the eighth. Friday, he threw 2.0 scoreless innings in the Cubs' 6-5 win vs. Milwaukee. Prior to his first major league stint, Petrick went 1-1 with two saves and a 2.37 ERA (8 ER/30.1 IP) in 18 games with Double-A Tennessee.

Cherry, 27, was recalled from Iowa yesterday and tossed 2.0 innings vs. Milwaukee, allowing an unearned run. He is 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA (3 ER/11.1 IP) in nine games over two stints with the big league club this season. With Iowa, Cherry has gone 2-0 with four saves and a 6.75 ERA (20 ER/26.2 IP) in 24 relief appearances.
