Wright, Smith Promoted

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs announced that 2007 draftees Ty Wright and Marquez Smith will join the team in Cedar Rapids while Clark Hardman has been sent to Mesa.

Wright was drafted in the 7th round this June out of Oklahoma State and is 7th in the NWL it hitting at .317 in 52 games for Boise before his promotion. Wright hit eight homers for Boise with 12 doubles, 44 RBI and 40 runs scored. The 44 RBI have Wright tied for second in the NWL. The left-fielder mostly hit in the cleanup spot and slugged .524 with 23 walks and only 22 strikeouts. The former OSU standout is hitting .372 against lefties this season and .333 in the month of August.

He led the Cowboys to the NCAA Super Regionals this season before they fell to Louisville. With OSU, Wright led the Big XII in hitting at .405 with a 35 game hit streak. His hit streak set a Big XII record and he became the first Cowboy to hit .400 since 2000. Wright is having a great week having gone 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and three RBI on Monday. Wright then went 1-for-4 with a solo homer on Tuesday against Yakima and 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored in his final NWL game Wednesday.

Smith was drafted by the Cubs twice and signed after being an 8th round pick this June. He was a college teammate at Clemson of Tyler Colvin who was the Cubs 1st pick in 2006. In 54 games this season for Boise, Smith hit .275 with five homers, 11 doubles and 41 RBI. He walked 38 times and struck out 40 times while scoring 37 runs. Smith drove home 24 runs in 30 July games and has hit 3rd in the Boise lineup for most of the season. In his final Boise game on Wednesday, Smith went 4-for-4 with a homer, four runs scored and three RBI. Smith hit .291 with 10 homers, 20 doubles and 48 RBI in 66 games for Clemson this season. A native of Ocala, Florida, Smith attended Forrest High School, the same program that produced Chiefs 2B/SS Nate Samson. Smith also attended Daytona Beach CC before playing at Clemson.

Hardman, a 9th round pick from the 2007 draft, appeared in 19 games for the Chiefs and hit .153 with seven RBI. He joined the team in South bend on July 17th and scored three runs while collecting two doubles and five walks. Hardman, who played exclusively left-field for the Chiefs will report to the Cubs Arizona Rookie League team in Mesa.

The Chiefs are now back to a 25 man roster for the first time since Josh Lansford injured his left knee at South Bend on July 20th. Wright and Smith will join the Chiefs in Cedar Rapids on Thursday for the two game series against the Kernels. The Chiefs enter Thursday's game with a 3 ½ game lead over both Burlington and Kane County for the second half Wild Card spot. Cedar Rapids is give games back and the Chiefs trail first place Quad Cities by 2 ½ games with 19 contests left.
