Broussard Happy to Join Cubs

DES MOINES – Newly acquired 1B/OF Ben Broussard was signed by the Cubs last week, joining his fourth organization in the last seven months. The 31-year-old Broussard started the second game of a doubleheader for Class AAA Iowa on Monday, going 0-for-4.

"I'm excited about it," Broussard said of joining the Cubs. "I've been kind of traveling all over the place, so it's nice to be up here and get to play. It's good to be in a Cubs jersey ... I've played in Wrigley before, and I've always said it's one of the best places in baseball. I think it is the best place to play in baseball, especially now.

"I'm here to show them what I can do, and hopefully get back up there."

The Cubs originally assigned Broussard to Iowa, but sent him to Class AA Tennessee in order to get some at-bats due to flooding in Des Moines. He homered in his first game with the Smokies and was 2-for-9 overall in two games with the club.

Broussard played in 524 games with the Cleveland Indians from 2002-06 and had a .321 batting average after 88 games with Cleveland in '06 before being traded to Seattle for OF Shin-Soo Choo and LHP Shawn Nottingham.

He has struggled ever since, hitting .260 in a season and a half with the Mariners and .159 in 26 games with the Texas Rangers this season. He was dropped by Texas and picked up by the New York Yankees in late May, playing in 12 games with Class AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre before being released on June 10.

Two days later, the Cubs picked him up.

"I was sitting at home for a little while ... I'm glad I'm out here getting a chance to play ball again," Broussard said. "This is what I love to do, so I'm glad I got a chance to be in this organization, and hopefully it will work out."

"I'm going to play some outfield and play first [with Iowa], and just try to get some good at-bats and just do my thing, and then let everything else take care of itself."

Broussard, a guitarist and song writer, released a 12-song, self-titled solo album in 2005. He wrote all lyrics to his songs during off-time in between games. His music has been licensed for numerous TV Shows and is for sale on his website, Additionally, Broussard performed a cover of U2's "With or Without You" for the MLB player CD "Oh Say Can You Sing", released in 2005.
