Tyler Colvin was playing in an Arizona Fall League game on Oct. 14 when he removed himself from the lineup after experiencing left elbow discomfort.
After visiting with team doctors in Chicago a week later, Colvin underwent Tommy John surgery last Sunday after visiting with a specialist in Ohio.
He is looking at "about five months out," said Oneri Fleita, the Cubs' Vice President of Player Personnel. Colvin will spend most of the offseason rehabbing in Arizona
"We're looking at maybe the start of the season," Fleita said of Colvin. "Everything went well. (He is) in great spirits. He's already entered the rehab, and we've got a great track record now for rehabbing guys and not missing any of the target dates."
The Cubs selected Colvin with their 2006 first-round draft pick from Clemson. He clubbed 11 home runs and batted .268 in his professional debut season at Class Low-A Boise in 2006 en route to garnering Northwest League Player of the Year honors by Baseball America.
In 2007, Colvin combined to bat .299 (147/492) in 125 games between Class Advanced-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee. This past season he played in 137 games at Tennessee and hit .256 with 14 home runs.
"I look for a full recovery," Fleita said. "He's got a great work ethic, so it's kind of a little blip on the screen, a little bump in the road. But the guy I know will battle through it and we'll see him on the field in right near the start of next season."
Cubs Expect Colvin to have Speedy Return
