The Dominican Instructional League Academy is put on each year, usually right after the Cubs' Arizona Instructional League. This year the Cubs' Latin American prospects accounted for in the Dominican reported on Oct. 16 and played their first exhibition game Oct. 17. Their final date in the academy is scheduled for Dec. 1.
A number of American players from the Cubs' farm system also make the trek to the Dominican each year, and this year those players reported on Oct. 19. They are scheduled to return home Nov. 15.
"We have two full teams so we play two games a day," Cubs Vice President of Player Personnel Oneri Fleita explained of the Dominican Academy. "It's an opportunity because we've got a number of middle infielders and catchers, and we can get guys a lot of playing time by having two full teams.
"We've got a ton of pitching. We've got a lot of players signed, so it's a nice opportunity for them. It's about five weeks of games. It's just a little extra to give some of these young guys a chance to play a little more baseball."
