Smith, Vitters Earn Recognition

Chicago Cubs prospects Marquez Smith and Josh Vitters earned recognition Tuesday, taking home Player of the Week honors in their respective leagues for the week of May 18-14.

Smith, 24, finished the week 12-for-31 with three home runs, two doubles and six RBI in nine games to earn Southern League Player of the Week honors for Class AA Tennessee.

He began the year at Class High A Daytona and was promoted to Tennessee in late April. In 23 games with the Smokies, he has batted .294 (25-for-85) with three home runs, eight doubles and nine RBI.

Smith was an eighth-round Cubs draft pick from Clemson in 2007.

Vitters, 19, took home Midwest League Player of the Week honors for Class-A Peoria, batting .367 (11-for-30) with five home runs, a double and 11 RBI in seven games.

He was the Cubs' first-round pick in the 2007 draft from Cypress (Calif.) High School.
