IOWA (CLASS AAA)
Shortstop Darwin Barney was promoted to Class AAA Iowa Tuesday following an All-Star first-half at Class AA Tennessee. Barney, 23, batted .317 with three home runs, 12 doubles and 32 RBI in 74 games at Double-A. Against left-handed pitching, he batted .415 (34 for 82) with seven doubles.
Earlier this week, Barney was named to the 2009 Southern League All-Star Game, set for July 13, at Birmingham, Ala. In 252 at-bats, Barney had 23 walks to 33 strikeouts and a .368 on-base percentage for Tennessee.
The Cubs selected Barney in the fourth round of the 2007 draft from Oregon State.
TENNESSEE (CLASS AA)
Right-hander Andrew Cashner and second baseman Nate Samson were promoted to Double-A from Class High-A Daytona.
Cashner, 22, made 12 starts for Daytona and had a 1.50 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 15 walks in 42 innings. He allowed 31 hits for a .201 average against and closed his stint in the Florida State League with 12 scoreless innings over his last three starts.
Cashner was the Cubs' first-round selection in the 2008 draft from TCU.
Samson, 21, played in 61 games for Daytona and batted .251 with three extra-base hits and 26 RBI. He drew 24 walks versus 10 strikeouts and had an on-base percentage of .332. Samson had a season-high four-hit game on June 28 at Fort Myers.
The Cubs selected Samson in the 34th round of the 2006 draft from Ocala Forest Senior High School (Fla.). A season ago, he batted .293 in 128 games at Class-A Peoria – tied for the seventh best average in the Midwest League.
DAYTONA (CLASS HIGH-A)
3B Josh Vitters and RHP Chris Carpenter were promoted to Daytona from Peoria.
Vitters, 19, batted .316 with 15 home runs, 12 doubles and 46 RBI in 70 games for Peoria. He combined for a .351 on-base percentage and closed his stint in the Midwest League by going 8-for-19 with two home runs and four RBI from June 25-28.
Ranked the Cubs' top prospect by Scout.com and Baseball American entering 2009, Vitters was Chicago's first-round pick in the 2007 draft from Cypress High School (Calif.).
Carpenter, 23, made 15 starts and was 4-3 with a 2.44 ERA, 60 strikeouts and 33 walks in 73 2/3 innings for Peoria. He turned in six quality starts and was not scored on in seven starts. He held opposing hitters to a .210 average against.
INF/C John Contreras was promoted to Daytona from Class Low-A Boise. He was 1-for-7 in three games with Boise.
Second baseman Derrick Fitzgerald was promoted to Peoria from the Arizona Rookie League. In eight games with the Cubs' Rookie League affiliate, he batted .500 (15 for 30) with one home run, four doubles, two triples and eight RBI.
Fitzgerald, 20, was a 22nd-round selection in the 2009 draft from Dyersburg State Community College (Tenn.).
BOISE (LOW-A, SS)
Catcher Matt Williams and RHP Corey Martin were promoted to Boise from the Arizona Rookie League.
Williams, 22, was 9 for 25 with two doubles in six games in the Arizona Rookie League. The Cubs selected Williams in the 18th round of the 2009 draft from Duke.
Martin, 22, made two appearances with the Cubs' Rookie League affiliate and allowed one run and four hits in three innings. The Cubs selected Martin in the 27th round of the 2009 draft from Western Carolina.
