Instead of sending a pitcher to the minor leagues, the Cubs placed infielder Andres Blanco on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf. Manager Lou Piniella said Blanco tweaked the muscle Saturday in Florida and "felt it" again Monday.
The moves likely foreshadow another round of roster shuffling to come Wednesday. Infielder Aaron Miles is due to come off the DL after finishing his minor league rehab at Class AAA Iowa. Miles has been out since late June with a hyperextended right elbow, and the Cubs never seemed in a hurry to get him back, especially since he started so slowly at the plate.
Tuesday's roster moves left the Cubs with an extra pitcher, but they needed an arm in the bullpen because Piniella has had to use his relievers a lot lately.
If Miles comes up Wednesday, either Jeff Samardzija or Jeff Stevens, both right-handed relievers, could go to Iowa. It'll be an interesting choice because Stevens has been the more effective reliever of late than the highly touted Samardzija.
CUBS 6, REDS 3: Gorzelanny, in his Cubs debut, worked 7 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and one run. The Cubs scored four runs in the sixth, batting around. Kosuke Fukudome and Derrek Lee had solo homers.
--RHP Kevin Gregg was given a second consecutive day off Tuesday because of a tired arm. Gregg blew two saves over the weekend in Florida.
--CF Kosuke Fukudome led off Tuesday's game with his eighth home run of the season. It was Fukudome's first home run in his career to lead off a game. Last season, Fukudome hit 10 homers.
--RHP Randy Wells ran his overall record to 8-4 with a 2.73 ERA after Monday's win over the Reds. He picked up his first major league win June 21 and is 7-1 since then. Wells has the lowest ERA among Cubs starters, and his eight victories are one shy of team leader Ted Lilly.
--C Geovany Soto is scheduled to come off the disabled list Friday at Colorado. Soto is rehabbing a strained left oblique strain in the minor leagues. He went a combined 2-for-5 Monday and Tuesday for Class AA Tennessee, hitting a homer in Tuesday's game.
--C Koyie Hill made his 25th consecutive start behind the plate and hit two doubles Tuesday, with his sixth-inning double driving in two runs. The last Cubs catcher to start 25 in a row behind the plate was Damon Berryhill in 1989.
--RHP Angel Guzman was the emergency closer. He finished the game, but it wasn't a save situation. Manager Lou Piniella gave closer Kevin Gregg Monday and Tuesday off, and Piniella did not want to use RHP Carlos Marmol, who finished Monday's game but who also has battled wildness again lately. Guzman pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and two runs. Marmol did get up in the bullpen during the ninth inning. --The Sports XChange
