Gillispie to Broadcast Cubs Games

Tennessee Smokies play-by-play announcer Mick Gillispie will broadcast four Chicago Cubs spring training games from the Cactus League this week. The games will be available to listen for free on the team's official website and via iPhone.

Gillispie will broadcast the Cubs' Monday affair against Cleveland at HoHoKam Park in Mesa; Tuesday's and Wednesday's games at Surprise, Ariz., against Kansas City and Texas, respectively; and Thursday's game against Arizona at Tucson.

All games are scheduled for 2:05 p.m. CDT.

The broadcasts are separate of those that are carried on the team's flagship station – WGN Radio – and Cubs Radio Network affiliates, and can be heard only through Cubs.com and by using the At Bat 2010 application for iPhone.

"Together with the Cubs' front office and marketing teams, we felt like it would be a good idea to put these games online and gauge interest," Gillispie said.

The 2010 season will be Gillispie's fourth as the play-by-play voice of the Tennessee Smokies, the Class AA affiliate of the Cubs. A native of Baltimore, Gillispie also provides play-by-play for the Crimson Tide Sports Network (CTSN) in Tuscaloosa, Ala., broadcasting University of Alabama baseball and women's basketball games.

This week will mark Gillispie's first time broadcasting a major league game.

Since the team's flagship station broadcasts only a select number of spring training games, the broadcasts that Gillispie will take part in this week will offer fans a chance to listen to live play-by-play of Cubs games on a different platform.

"Like everyone else, I love listening to Ron Santo and Pat Hughes and wish I was working with them, but this is a separate deal," Gillispie said.

"To keep it in perspective, it is only four spring training games, but with that in mind, my hope is that we can work hard and do a good job for Cubs fans. I'm ready to get out there, give it my best, and have fun."
