"Everybody went out there a little tense," Hawks starter Austin Kirk said. "We were all really excited for our home opener. I was really excited to be able to throw, but things didn't really turn out the way we wanted them to."
Salem-Keizer jumped out to an early lead in the third inning on an RBI single from Chris Lofton, putting the Volcanoes up 1-0.
The momentum completely shifted to the Volcanoes in the fourth when Jose Medina and Jesse Shriner hit back-to-back home runs on the first two pitches of the inning to give Salem-Keizer a 3-0 lead.
"I went in and I threw the pitches where I wanted them and in the spot I wanted them, but they were being really aggressive and put up two really good swings that just happened to be right next to each other," said Kirk, who allowed three runs and five hits in four innings in his 2010 debut.
"You just have to shrug those things off and then just keep going."
A half inning later, the Hawks answered when first baseman Richard Jones hit a double to center that scored Jesus Morelli from second.
The Hawks then yielded an unearned run in the fifth, giving Salem-Keizer a 4-1 lead with Boise fighting to seize back momentum.
Alvaro Ramirez doubled to lead off the Boise fifth and Wes Darvill drove him in from third base with an RBI groundout to make it 4-2.
The final blow to the Hawks came in the eighth when Salem-Keizer sealed the victory with another unearned run off reliever Chris Huseby to cap the scoring at 5-2.
"Coming back here, we love playing in front of all these fans. It gives us a rush," Kirk said. "I felt like we played hard and we are going to come back (Tuesday) and go for that second game win," Kirk said.
Salem-Keizer out-hit Boise, 10-6. Ramirez led the Hawks with two hits.
