When I heard Brent Davis used a tight end in his offense I was reminded how Ron Leshinski was once a force as an option tight end for Bob Sutton. The Black Knights have played without a tight end since 2009 but Davis uses a tight end in his offensive formations. The new staff landed two new tight end recruits.
Sam Walker is a 6-4, 220 pound tight end from Cumming, Georgia. Walker was a first-team all-county and all-region player his senior season. Walker made 32 receptions for 408 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Walker is a big physical player with average speed. Sam chose Army over offers from Air Force, Georgia Southern and Georgia State. Walker will attend the prep school this fall.
Zachary Saum is a 6-4, 215 pound tight end from Cathedral high school in Indiana. He originally committed to Ball State but Tucker Waugh convinced him that West Point was the place for him. Saum is an athletic pass catching tight end who can split out wide as a wide receiver or an H-back. His senior year Saum posted 36 receptions for 560 receiving yards and five touchdowns. As a junior Zach had 21 receptions for 314 yards and a touchdown. Saum won four state championships during his high school career.
Fullback is a position of concern with Larry Dixon entering his senior year. The fullback position received a hit when last year's star fullback at USMAPS, Jonathan Mixon, was separated from the prep school. This will probably be a position of need in 2015. The Black Knights may have found some answers with four B-back prospects. Darnell Woolfolk (5-10, 220) was an All-State flexbone fullback and a Mike linebacker at Maine-Endwell high school in New York. He was named Class B MVP as he helped Maine-Endwell win three straight state titles and closed his high school career with 38 straight wins. Woolfolk looks like a Division I player and could be a potential impact player on either side of the ball.
Teran Barnitz (6-0, 215) was being recruited by John Loose for Lafayette College before Loose took the linebacker coaching job at Army. Shortly after Loose joined the Black Knights he extended an offer to Barnitz who accepted. Barnitz earned second team All- State honors as he rushed for 1,106 yards on 157 carries, a 7.0 average and scored 15 touchdowns last fall. Morgan Willcox is a 5-feet, 11 inch, 225 pound fullback from Ohio. He was used mostly as a blocker and short yardage runner. Willcox was named second team all-GCL South last season. Kendall Tu'ua, (5-11, 215) ran for more than 1,400 yards and scored 15 touchdowns his senior season at Timpview high school in Utah. Tu'ua is a good athlete and was ranked third out of 41 athletes who participated in the All Poly junior camp. Tu'ua's
lack of breakaway speed, despite his production, led to Army being his only FBS offer.
