South Bend Sweeps Away the Wizards

In a two game sweep the South Bend Silver Hawks knocked off the Fort Wayne Wizards and did it by throwing strikes, taking walks, and getting timely hitting from Jeff Cook and Alex Frazier. Next up, the winner of tonight's West Michigan/Lansing game.

For many Silver Hawks fans, the winning of a playoff series seemed to take place so long ago. Thursday night at The Cove, the Hawks got out of the first round of the playoffs with a sweep of the Fort Wayne Wizards in a 5-2 victory.

Once again it was recently promoted Chris Carter at DH and left fielder Alex Frazier leading the way for South Bend, but on Thursday night first baseman Allen Mottram was the big bat for the Silver Hawks.  The Hawks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second after Carter opened the inning with a base hit to left field and was driven home when Mottram, who after not tripling all season long, tripled to left-center field to give the Hawks the lead.

Mottram wasn't done, as he drove in another run in the third. With one out, Alex Frazier singled and advanced to second on a walk to Carter. Mottram then followed with a single, scoring Frazier to bump the Hawks lead up to 2-0.

Alex Frazier 7 3 2 2
Chris Carter 7 2 2 1
Allen Mottram 7 2 0 2
Jeff Cook 7 3 1 2

Meanwhile righthander Danny Muegge was on.  Over 6.2 innings Muegge scattered eight hits while striking out seven and giving up only one run before turning the game over to left hander Daniel Mosquea and then recently promoted (from the Yakima Bears) Dustin Glant to seal the deal.  While Fort Wayne managed 11 hits the Silver Hawk's pitching staff threw strikes the entire game, granting the Wizards nary a walk in the game.

Fort Wayne pulled within one in the third to make it a 2-1 lead, but the Hawks scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to push their lead to 4-1. Frazier, who led the team in the regular season in RBI, drove in his first run of the post-season with a single in the fifth, while RF Jeff Cook's sixth inning RBI single moved the Hawks to a 4-1 lead.

Cook joined Mottram with a pair of RBI when he drove in Augie Murillo with an insurance run in the eighth inning.

Danny Muegge collected his first win of the post season and Dustin Glant earned his first save in the 5-2 win.

The Silver Hawks will face either the West Michigan Whitecaps or Lansing Lugnuts beginning Saturday in Grand Rapids or Lansing, with game two of the series to be played at the Silverhawks home field, The Cove, Sunday night.
