The Arizona Diamondbacks have traded infielder Chris Carter (Tucson) to the Washington Nationals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Emiliano Fruto (Columbus), as announced by Diamondbacks' Senior Vice President and General Manager Josh Byrnes.
Fruto has pitched in 18 games (16 starts) for the Columbus Clippers (AAA) this season, going 3-0 with a 5.26 ERA (51 ER in 87.1 IP), 59 walks and 68 strikeouts. From April 21 to June 10, Fruto won three of his four starts (with a no-decision) with a 2.49 ERA (6 ER in 21.2 IP) with 25 strikeouts.
Originally signed as non-drafted free agent by Seattle on July 2, 2000, Fruto spent his first six years in the Mariners' system (2001-06) before a trade to Washington on Dec. 18, 2006. He made his Major League debut last year for Seattle, going 2-2 with a 5.50 ERA (22 ER in 36.0 IP) in 23 games after being called up on May 4. With his big league debut on May 14 at Los Angeles-AL, Fruto became the eighth Colombian native to play in the Major Leagues.
Carter has played in 126 games for the Tucson Sidewinders (AAA) this season, batting .324 (163-for-503) with 39 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs and 84 RBI.
