Diamondbacks Clinch Playoff Spot

The Arizona Diamondbacks clinched a playoff berth with a 4-2 win over the Rockies, snapping Colorado's 11-game winning streak and dropping Arizona's magic number for the division title to 2.

Brandon Webb finally gave a strong showing against the Colorado Rockies by pitching seven innings of two-run ball.  As ever, Brandon Lyon and Jose Valverde followed with two scoreless innings of their own.

The Diamondbacks' offense manufactured a run in the second inning.  Then in the third, Conor Jackson bashed a home run into the left field stands that scored Justin Upton.  A Mark Reynolds double was followed by a Stephen Drew RBI single in the 6th, accounting for Arizona's fourth run

The Diamondbacks also stole two notable bases in the game.  Eric Byrnes became the second Diamondback ever to steal 50 bases in a season, joining Tony Womack, who swiped 72 in 1999.  Chris Young added his 27th steal of the year, and could become the first rookie ever to go 30-30 if he can steal three more bases in the final two games of the regular season.

The Padres also beat the Brewers Friday night, which struck a two pronged blow to the Diamondbacks' divisional chances.  First, it kept Arizona's magic number at 2.  Second, the victory knocked the Brewers out of postseason contention, which means the Padres could have an easier time winning its next two games in Milwaukee.

Also, the potential playoff opponent Chicago Cubs can rest their starters for their final two games with the Central Division wrapped up.
