Cyle Hankerd cranked out a grand slam Tuesday night to lead the West Oahu
Canefires to a 6-3 win over the Waikiki Beach Boys. The victory clinched the
Hawaiian Baseball League West Division for West Oahu.
The first inning blast was Hankerd's fifth homer of the season, which ties him for second in the league, and the four RBI gives him 30 total, which paces the league. His .545 slugging average ranks second while his .318 batting average comes in eighth.
Hankerd's slam drove in fellow Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Mark Hallberg, who legged out a one-out infield single in the first. Hallberg would go 3-for-5 with two runs scored in the contest. His 38 hits paces all of Hawaii while his 24 runs scored is runner up to Tyler Henson's total of 26. The middle infielder is now batting .352, good for the fourth best average in the league.
Hankerd, Hallberg, and the rest of the Canefires will face the East Division Winner in the Hawaiian League Championship Game this Sunday. The opponent is yet to be determined, as Waikiki holds a ½-game advantage over the Honolulu Sharks with three games remaining in the regular season.
