Yusmeiro Petit Headed to DL

Yusmeiro Petit landed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after he strained his right shoulder Friday night. Bobby Korecky has been recalled as an extra bullpen arm in the short term, while a minor league pitcher will be recalled to take Wednesday's start.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed right-hander Yusmeiro Petit on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder. T Petit was lifted after four innings of Arizona's 5-4 loss to Washington on Friday night because of the strain, according to new Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch.

"He felt something and he's going to get some tests done," Hinch said before Arizona played the Nationals on Saturday night. "We're going to err on the side of caution."

Petit, who is 0-3 with an 8.03 ERA this season, had replaced injured Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb in the rotation.  Hinch has not yet decided who will assume Petit's scheduled start next Wednesday against Cincinnati.

"There's a good option in Triple-A, we've got a couple of options in Double-A who are pitching well," Hinch said. "We'll get to who it is in time and until then we'll go with one extra guy in the bullpen."

The "good option" at Reno is believed to be Billy Buckner, who opened the season in Arizona's bullpen.  His velocity was down, which led to seven earned runs over just four big league innings before he was sent down.  He has stretched his arm out to become a starter, and threw five strong innings in a victory May 7th.  He is on the 40-man roster.

Although Hinch cited "options" at Double-A, the only sensible option would be Bryan Augenstein.  Augenstein is 5-0 with a 0.78 ERA with Mobile, and pitched only three perfect innings Saturday night due to a 93-minute rain delay, meaning he could feasibly pitch on three days of rest Wednesday.  The one issue with promoting Augenstein is that he is not currently on the 40-man roster, although there is currently room to add him, so no one would need to clear waivers and be removed from that list.

Right-handed reliever Bobby Korecky was recalled from Triple-A Reno to take Petit's roster spot in the short term.  Korecky walked three batters and allowed three runs in his four-inning major league stint earlier this season.  He is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in eight Triple-A innings.
