Haley Wins 400th Game as a Silver Hawk

South Bend, IN – With a 10-4 defeat of the Peoria Chiefs on Thursday night, manager Mark Haley has recorded his 400th victory while wearing a Silver Hawks uniform. Haley, who was given a Gatorade shower upon the final out, has been managing his hometown team since 2005 and is the all-time winningest manager in Silver Hawks history.

The Silver Hawks left little doubt in Thursday's game, racing out to a 4-0 lead and continuing to pour it on for the 10-4 final margin. Starting pitcher Eric Smith (WP, 5-3) benefited from all the runs, recording his team-leading fifth victory on the mound.

Keon Broxton sparked the four-run rally in the third against Peoria starter Rob Whitenack (LP, 4-4), picking up a RBI on his Midwest League-leading eighth triple of the season. Broxton later scored on a RBI single by Bobby Borchering for a 2-0 lead. South Bend wasn't finished scoring in the inning, however, with Matt Davidson adding a RBI double and David Nick ripping a RBI single for the 4-0 lead.

After Peoria made it 4-2 in the fifth, South Bend blew the game open again in the sixth inning with another four run frame. Errol Hollinger plated the first run with a bases loaded single and Broxton followed with a bases loaded walk for his second RBI of the game. Borchering added a two-out, two-run single to bring his RBI total to 30 on the season and make it an 8-2 game.

Peoria scored two more runs (one earned) in the seventh against Chris Odegaard (ND), but the Silver Hawks again had an answer with a two-run eighth. Chris Owings had an RBI double and Nick added a sacrifice fly for the final 10-4 margin.

The lone flaw for the Silver Hawks on Thursday was defense, as the Silver Hawks committed a seasonnhigh four errors leading to three unearned runs. Both runs charged to Smith were unearned, lowering his ERA to 2.50 this season.

Broxton had the game expected of a leadoff hitter, walking three times in addition to the triple, scoring twice and driving in two. Borchering has now hit in 11 of his last 12 games, while Owings and Davidson both extended their hitting streaks to six games.
