Elbow Infection Might DL Blake
Sports Xchange
The Dodgers might be without the starters on the left side of their infield for four weeks

Shortstop Rafael Furcal is on the disabled list because a broken thumb, and won't return until late May Casey Blake probably will join him shortly because to some type of infection in his left elbow

Blake wouldn't allow the training staff to discuss his medical condition, so details are fairly sketchy Manager Don Mattingly only had a "layman's" explanation, but said it was "a dangerous situation" because doctors might need to "open it up and flush out, and there's a period of time for that "

A day earlier, Blake wasn't sure what caused it, although it might have been when he dived for a grounder over the weekend in Chicago

The left elbow swelled up dramatically Monday night, and a sample was taken to test for infection Tuesday Blake's fever went up again early Wednesday morning, which prompted a hospital visit and IV antibiotics

Blake flew back to Los Angeles with the team after the Dodgers' 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Marlins Blake was swinging the bat well, reaching base in 15 of his last 26 plate appearances, including two home runs and nine runs scored

"I'm sure he's disappointed," Mattingly said "He had the injury this spring, came back, then even the little groin thing was frustrating, thinking that's a day or two The elbow pops up the first day into that Now it looks like something more of a long-term thing

"It's frustrating for us, too You want to be at full strength and get your guys on the field I don't know how to categorize something like this We need to really be cautious with him "

More tests will be done on Thursday's day off, but Mattingly believes Blake will be sidelined closer to four weeks than 15 days

Russ Mitchell is most likely to be called up from Triple-A Albuquerque Mitchell is on the 40-man roster, can play the infield or outfield corners He is batting only 214 and missed a few games earlier this month after being hit on the elbow

Mitchell has two two-hit games, and two home runs in the last four games

Juan Uribe (right hip flexor) hasn't started for five straight games now, including Wednesday, so the loss of Furcal and Blake has an even bigger impact

"That's three of our starting infielders," pitcher Clayton Kershaw said "That obviously hurts At the same time, the three guys we have in there are perfectly capable of getting the job done

"They're sound defensively and can hit the ball We have to steal some wins hear and there, especially against good pitchers As a team, I think we're fine "
