Final Score: Dodgers 9, Reds 1
-Kershaw started off brilliantly, retiring the first three batters in order. He struggled with his control in the 2nd and 3rd innings, throwing mostly fastballs but missing up, failing to finish off his pitches. Clayton fixed the problem in the 4th, striking out the first two batters and inducing a foul pop out to retire the third.
-The offense was led, predictably, by Adam Kennedy and A.J. Ellis. Tony Gwynn had a pair of hits batting leadoff, Mark Ellis doubled, as did Alex Castellanos.
-Relievers Josh Lindblom, Josh Wall, Michael Antonini and Will Savage combined for 4 shutout innings and 5 strikeouts. Jamey Wright gave up a few hits and a run, though it was preceded by a Justin Sellers error and unearned.
-The game featured two of the more bizarre plays that I've seen in a while. The first occurred after Trent Oeltjen ripped a ball down the right field line. The right fielder stumbled, leading to what looked like a triple for the Aussie. But as Tim Wallach frantically tried to hold Trent up, the over-zealous outfielder charged right through the sign and headed home. A cutoff throw seemed to have nailed Oeltjen at home, but the ball popped out of the catcher's mitt. However, the catcher blocked Trent from touching home, grabbed the ball and tagged him out.
-The other bizarre play involved Josh Fields, who cued the ball up the first base line in foul territory. Thinking the play was over, Fields casually walked around the batters box to prepare for the next pitch. But the ball had some serious english on it, rolling back into fair territory, right in front of the first baseman, who promptly picked it up and tagged the base. That type of play is one in a million, but it won't endear Fields to the coaches.
My first day at Camelback Ranch. I hear they're celebrating my arrival with a game against the Royals at 1:05pm. Perhaps I'll watch.
