Matt Magill got the starting nod for the Lookouts. Magill had a dazzling five inning, no-hit bid in his first start of the season, things didn't go as well for the right-hander in Wednesday's match up.
Already leading 1-0, Birmingham dropped seven runs on Magill in the second inning. The Barons collected six hits during the bat-around frame, including hitting for the cycle. Magill was pulled from the game after just three innings, left on the hook for his first loss of the season.
Although trailing 8-0, Chattanooga would not go down without a late-inning battle.
After scoring one run in the third inning, the Lookouts plated three in the sixth and four in the seventh before reaching the stretch.
Nick Buss tripled twice late in the game, scoring two runs for the Lookouts. Pedro Baez came around to score twice and Travis Denker drove in two runs in the sixth inning.
Geison Aguasviva was brought on to pitch two-third of an innings and Steven Ames recorded the final out to keep Birmingham within reach, but Barons reliever Henry Mabee pitched two and two-thirds innings of shut-out baseball to put the Lookouts away.
"The comeback was good, especially being down 8-0," Subero said. "Being able to bounce back after scoring just one run through five innings was good. It was a good ballgame. Nice character coming back and putting things together late in the game."
After struggling to put runs on the board Tuesday, Buss is optimistic about the team's chances once the offense gets on the same page and begins to string hits together.
"We've just got to start putting it together at the right time," Buss said. "We have a great team here. We just have to get it going consistently and we will start getting the wins."
Nathan Eovoldi (0-0, 2.45 ERA) is set to start tomorrow for Chattanooga and right-hander Matt Zaleski (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for Birmingham in the series finale. After Thursday's 7:15 p.m. game, the Lookouts will travel to Sevierville, Tenn., to take on the Tennessee Smokies in a five-game series.
