2012 TigsTown Awards: Lakeland Flying Tigers

With the season wrapped up, it's time once again to start handing out the hardware. Which pitcher and player excelled the most for the Lakeland Flying Tigers?

Lakeland Flying Tigers Player of the Year
3B Nick Castellanos

Lakeland 215 .405 .461 .553 42 / 22 3 / 2

The only debate about whether or not Castellanos would get this award was whether his overall season was enough to merit the Organizational Player of the Year award. While he lost out in that debate, his Florida State League campaign was nothing short of sensational. With an incredible .405 batting average in 55 games, Castellanos forced the Tigers to promote him to Double-A around mid-season. Behind his sparkling batting average, Castellanos piled up some extra-base hits, including 17 doubles, three triples and three home runs, leaving him with a healthy .553 slugging average. Though Castellanos has since been moved to the outfield, he did show some improvements in his actions and throwing while at third base with Lakeland, rounding out what was a truly remarkable High-A stint for the Tigers top prospect.

Lakeland Flying Tigers Pitcher of the Year
RHP Tyler Clark

Lakeland 6-1 31 / 0 42.2 0.63 59 / 17 .137

As incredible as Castellanos' half-season in Lakeland was, Clark may have trumped him without many fans actually noticing. Pitching out of the Flying Tigers bullpen, Clark compiled a 6-1 record with nine saves in 31 games before earning his promotion to Double-A Erie. When you start to dig deeper, you begin to see why the funky right-handers season was so incredible. In 42 2/3 innings, Clark allowed a ridiculous 19 hits and 17 walks while striking out 59 batters and finishing with a 0.63 ERA. He allowed only three earned runs and one home run in his time with Lakeland.
