Born on July 19, 1991 in Wichita, Kansas. Selected by the Dodgers in the 2nd round of the 2009 draft. Listed at 6'4 and 210 pounds.
Pitched just 2.2 innings in his debut, allowing 3 earned runs while walking 2 and striking out 4 for rookie-level Ogden. Returned to Ogden in 2010, compiling a 4.06 ERA in 13 starts, averaging 8.1 K/9 , 3.1 BB/9 and 0.6 HR/9.
Spent all of 2011 with Great Lakes, tallying 123.2 innings and posting a career best 2.40 ERA, striking out 104, walking 37 and surrendering just 8 home runs.
Assigned to Rancho Cucamonga in 2012 and posted a 5.75 ERA, struck out 8.5 per 9, walked 3.7 per 9 and allowed 19 homers in 130 innings.
Big and strong, workhorse build. No more room for projection.
Funky delivery, rocks back and forth through his release. High 3/4 arm angle.
Garrett's fastball velocity has taken a step back since his high school days, sitting in the high 80s rather than the low 90s. The pitch has decent life but he doesn't command it well enough without the extra mph. His curve is still a knockout pitch, one of the best breakers in the system. His changeup has become a reliable third offering.
Medium/Low. Coming off a great year in 2011, the odds were stacked against Gould to repeat as he headed to the pitcher's hell that is the California League, and he folded. His walk rate increased by a free pass per 9 and his homer rate doubled. Oddly, he gave up 15 of 19 longballs to righties, who batted .337 against him. Lefties OPS'd just .573.
While this is certainly problematic, it's better than Gould getting hammered by lefties and righties equally. If he can get lefties out, there's some hope that he can get righties out as well. Maybe a new pitch (cutter? slider). Maybe a new approach. The curve still plays and he still gets K's.
It's tough to say where Garrett will head this season. The Double A rotation looks pretty full, so he may be headed back for redemption in Rancho. If the fastball doesn't pick up, he'll need to add a weapon to battle righties or drastically improve his command. Neither are likely, but both are possible.
