The Dodgers' offensive woes continued as the team left 10 runners on base and went 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position on the way to a shutout loss.
Clayton Kershaw ran into trouble in the 8th inning, when his fastball command disappeared, leading to a pair of one out singles and a walk to load the bases. He didn't receive help from teammate and friend Shawn Tolleson, just recalled from Albuquerque, who proceeded to walk in the next two batters. J.P. Howell would replace him and retire the next two batters without further damage.
The Dodgers' first scoring threat came in the 4th, when the club loaded the bases with two outs. Justin Sellers' infield single was the only hit with runners in scoring position but the men on first and second moved station to station, bringing up Kershaw in a crucial situation. Clayton grounded out to end the threat. The Dodgers are now 0 for 13 this season with the bases loaded.
L.A. had another opportunity in the top of the 8th, when Matt Kemp singled and Adrian Gonzalez walked with 1 out. Carl Crawford came off the bench to pinch-hit for Juan Uribe, but struck out against reliever David Hernandez. Andre Ethier followed with a groundout to first, stranding the tying run on second base.
There was a glimmer of hope at the end of the game, with two on and one out for Jerry Hairston, but the veteran's grounder up the middle was gobbled up by Josh Wilson, who flipped to Cliff Pennington to start the 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
Kershaw (2-1) was visibly upset after being pulled, yelling in the dugout after he was pulled by Mattingly. However, he'd already made 111 pitches and just walked the bases loaded. The likely target of his anger was himself.
The Dodgers send lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-1) to the mound tomorrow to face off with Arizona's ace Ian Kennedy (1-0). Game time is 5:10pm.
