Things you won't see often: talking dogs, Skip Schumaker not making an appearance in a Mattingly-managed game and Juan Uribe drawing three walks.
Uribe, earning the start in the stead of a surprisingly passable Jerry Hairston Jr. and struggling Luis Cruz, made the most of his opportunity by reaching base in all four of his plate appearances and driving in the eventual game-winning run in the ninth inning. His on-base percentage now resides in the area of .400.
Nick Punto, spelling Mark Ellis at second, hit a leadoff double to start the rally, went to third on Adrian Gonzalez' groundout and, after an intentional walk to Matt Kemp, scored on Andre Ethier's single.
The insurance run would prove necessary, as Brandon League, on for the save, allowed a solo home run to Ike Davis, who was frustrated in his at bats against starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. Ryu yielded just one run in seven innings, striking out eight.
Kenley Jansen, who picked up for Ryu in the eighth, allowed a base hit and a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, the hulking hurler would get a crucial strikeout against David Wright, a flyout from Lucas Duda and another K versus Marlon Byrd to end the threat. He also picked up the win.
Matt Kemp stayed hot at the plate, with a pair of singles to raise his average to .266. However, a bonehead play on the basepaths killed a scoring chance in the 7th. Ethier's go-ahead single came against a lefty. Carl Crawford had a solid single in the sixth. The team left four men on base, but went 3 for 5 with runners in scoring position.
The club heads back to LA for a weekend homestand with the Brewers starting tomorrow. Josh Beckett will face off with Hiram Burgos. Game time is 7:10pm Pacific.
