The Dodgers have just announced that they have traded recently DFA'd reliever Matt Guerrier to the Cubs for recently DFA'd reliver Carlos Marmol. The Dodgers have also acquired the Cubs number 92 overall international bonus slot, worth $209,700, which they can use in the new international signing period, which began earlier today.
Guerrier, who signed a three year deal with the Dodgers prior to the 2011 season, was designated for assignment last week after posting a 4.80 ERA in 34 games in 2013. The 34 year old right-hander pitched in 70 games for the Dodgers in 2011, but struggled with injuries last year and performance issues this year.
Marmol, 30, set the single-season strikeout rate record for relievers in 2010 with a 15.99 / 9 mark. He recorded 38 saves that year and 34 in 2011. In 2013, however, Carlos' ERA has skyrocketed to 5.86 and he's allowed 6 home runs and 21 walks in just 27.2 innings.
The real value in this deal is in the international pool money. Today sees the beginning of the 2013-2014 international signing period. With the CBA's new restrictions on bonuses, the Dodgers were relegated to a $2.1 million total that they could spend over the next calendar year. The slot money they received from the Cubs bumps their pool up by nearly 10%.
Starting last season, the Dodgers showed a renewed effort in signing young talent from around the world. While the headlines belong to players such as Yasiel Puig and Hyun-Jin Ryu, Los Angeles also spent heavily in the Dominican Republic and Mexico. 16 year old left-hander Julio Urias received a bonus believed to be worth more than $1 million. They also spent six figures on outfielders Michael Medina and Ariel Sandoval, as well as shortstop Cristian Gomez.
This year, the Dodgers have been connected to Dominican shortstop Lucas Tirado, who could command a seven figure bonus from the organization. With the additional money received in this trade, the club has extra room to negotiate with the players on their radar.
