The Chicago Cubs have traded RHP Matt Garza to the Texas Rangers for 3B Mike Olt, RHP, C.J. Edwards, RHP Justin Grimm and two players to be named later. Olt and Grimm will report to Iowa and Edwards will be sent to Daytona.
Garza was scheduled to pitch tonight in Arizona but LHP Chris Rusin has been promoted from Iowa and will make the start.
Olt was rumored in trades with the Cubs last year at the deadline as well as with other clubs the past two years. The 6-foot-2 corner infielder's best asset is his bat as he posses plus power with great patience and bat speed but does have a high strikeout rate. Olt is considered a good defender at third with a plus arm and good range due to his athleticism.
Olt jumped to the top of the Rangers' prospects list after hitting 14 homers in 69 games in the Carolina League in 2011 and then hit .288/.398/.579 and blasted 28 bombs in AA in 2012. Olt had a disastrous April in AAA Round Rock hitting .139/.235/.236 the first month of the season before he revealed he was having issues with his eye. After a month, it was discovered he had a problem with the tear ducts in one of his eyes and was given drops that immediately corrected the problem. Since his return, the 24-year-old is hitting .246 with 10 HR, 26 RBI, 26 BB, and 57 K in 45 games and hit a three-run homer last night to beat the Iowa Cubs.
C.J. Edwards was a 48th round pick in 2011, singed at the deadline, and has been impressive ever since. The 6-foot-2, 155-pounder has a thin frame but that doesn't stop him from being able to throw a fastball anywhere from 89-96 mph. The 21-year-old also throws a plus curveball and an improving change-up.
Began his pro career June 20, 2012 in AZL vs Royals with 5 shutout innings and less than a month later made his NWL debut July 12 allowing an unearned run in five frames. Had fanned nine twice and also beat Boise Hawks on Aug. 2. He threw 67 innings in his first year, fanning 85 with a .141 BAA and an ERA of 1.48. The right-hander has been even more impressive this season going 8-2 with a 1.83 ERA and BAA of .186 in the South Atlantic League. He had 122 punchouts in 93.1 innings with 34 walks. He has yet to allow a homer in 160.1 innings.
Justin Grimm was drafted by the Rangers in the 5th round in 2010 out of the University of Georgia. He quickly made his way through the Rangers system pitching in two levels of A ball in 2011 and then going from AA to his MLB debut in 2012. Grimm started two games for Texas last year going 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA.
The 6-foot-3 righty joined teh Rangers rotation this season going 7-7 with a 6.36 ERA in 17 starts. He has not pitched in a game since July 12. He features an above average fastball that runs in the low 90s, a good curve, and has developed a change-up.
Garza has pitched three years for the North Siders with a 21-18 record and a 3.45 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. The Cubs acquired Garza in January of 2011 along with Zach Rosscup and Fernando Perez for Hak-Ju Lee, Chris Archer, Robinson Chirinos, Sam Fuld and Brandon Guyer.
