Down on the Dodger Farm

The Dodger minor league clubs again went 3-1 as Las Vegas (7-3), Jacksonville (3-2) and Vero Beach (5-2) won while Columbus lost 5-4 in 10 innings.

Las Vegas 7, Portland 3--Luis Garcia went 3-for-4 and his three-run homer put the 51s ahead 3-2 in the sixth. Right-hander Heath Totten (1-0) got the win, allowing two runs in six innings. He gave up five hits and one walk and struck out two. Las Vegas stretched the lead to 4-2 in the seventh on Chen's RBI double. The 51s' bullpen held a lead for the second straight night. Doug Nickle, Troy Brohawn, Agustin Montero and Mark Johnson combined to work three innings. Johnson faced a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth, but a double play to end the game.

Jacksonville 3- Tennessee 2--Willy Aybar's game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning led the Suns to a victory in front of 10,116 fans. The Suns (2-0) supplied more dramatics earlier, when they tied the game in the eighth inning on a pinch-hit home run by Jesse Hoorelbeke. Ryan Ketchner pitched five innings, allowing two hits and just one unearned run, getting a no-decision. He held Tennessee hitless in the first four innings. Nelson Castro's first inning home run off starter gave the Suns to a 1-0 lead. Yhency Brazoban (1-0) stranded a runner at third base in the ninth inning and earned the victory for the Suns.

Vero Beach 5 - St. Lucie 2--The Dodgers got outstanding starting pitching and solid bullpen work, stopping the Mets in the home opener. RHP Jonathan Broxton (1-0) permitted a pair of runs in the first inning, then went five innings before giving way to LHP Jonathan Figueroa who worked three shutout innings and RHP Steve Schmoll (sv 1) preserved the win. Russell Martin drove in two more runs and1B Scott Gillitzer added what turned out to be the game's decisive blow, a two-out, two-run double in the second, breaking a 2-2 tie.

Capital City 5-Columbus 4 10 innings--The Catfish tied the game 4-4 with a run in the last of the ninth but Cap City tagged Oscar Delos Santos (0-1) for run in the 10th. Zach Hammes started and allowed three earned runs in six innings, leaving he game trailing 4-3. Andy LaRoche singled and homered, knocking in two runs. Mike Nixon singled and doubled, Chin-lung Hu had a pair of singles and Etanislao Abreu and Matt Kemp added RBI.
