Down on the Dodger Farm June 18

The Ogden Raptors are a team loaded with newcomers as befits one that plays at the game's lower levels. Friday night, though, it was a trio of familiar faces that carried the Raptors to a 3-2 victory over Idaho Falls in their Pioneer League opener.

Righthander Phil Sobkow started and threw an effective five innings in which he allowed only three hits and one run. After rookie Brian Akin was reached for a home run that tied the game at 2-2, Gabe Alvarez came on to retire five of the six batters he faced. He wound up the winner when another old hand, Luis Castillo doubled in the top of the ninth, went to third on a ground out and scored on a fly ball by one of those new guys, Luke May, who played in the Gulf Coast League last summer.

Edmonton 8, Las Vegas 4)--Once again, Edwin Jackson (6-4) was decidedly not in form as he was banged around for nine hits and five runs in 5.2 innings, leaving him with a 5.35 ERA. Solo homers by Antonio Perez (9), Chin Feng Chen (12), Jose Flores (3) and Eric Riggs (2) accounted for the 51's runs. They're 13 out in the PCL South.

Tennessee 10, Jacksonville 7--The loss eliminated the Suns in the Southern League East first half, leaving them 3 1/2 out with just two games remaining. Willie Aybar went 2-4 with a home run (9), driving in three and is now 10-16 in his last three games. T. J. Nall (4-3) was pounded (14 hits, seven runs in four innings ).

Daytona 3, Vero Beach 1--The win clinched the Florida State East first half title for the Cubs. Vero, eliminated yesterday, is 6 1/2 out. Mike Megrew (4-2) threw well (, four hits, three runs) but was still the loser. Joel Guzman had a double and two singles to raise his average to .320.

Columbus-Savannah--Postponed due to unplayable conditions. Will be made up at a later date.

Player Moves--Dodger reliever Paul Shuey will begin a rehab assignment at Ogden. Eric Riggs, who has been out since late April, was activated at Las Vegas. ... Lefthander Randy Leek was released at Jacksonville and was promptly signed by Tennessee (Cardinals). He was replaced by righthander Eric Hull, recalled from Vero for the second time. ... Lefthander Jonathan Figueroa and third baseman Russ Mitchell have been sent from Vero to Columbus in what well could be the first move of several player switches between the two teams for the second half.
