Dodger Farm Report August 22

Edwin Jackson was back in action Friday night. Only two innings, true, but a rather encouraging two at that. So much so that the Dodgers are thinking that could be enough rehabilitation and perhaps back to the big leagues for the promising right-hander is the next order of business.

Jackson went those innings for Las Vegas at Tucson , giving up two hits, no runs, walking none and striking out one. He seemed to have his velocity and his command, something that had deserted him before he was shut down with a muscle strain in his pitching arm. . Vegas went one to win 5-1 and now the brass must decide whether Jackson needs more work down in the minors or opt for an immediate call-up.

Masao Kida put in a bid for a September move to the big club himself by following Jackson with five very effective innings in which the Sidewinders managed only two hits and that solitary run. T. J. Mathew went the final two for his first save since being rescued from independent ball . Brian Myrow and Joe Thurston both banged two hits to lead the offense. The 51's are now tied for third in the PCL South (a four-team division ) , 14 games out.

Elsewhere, though, losing prevailed for Dodger entries.

Chattanooga 8, JACKSONVILLE 3
It was the fourth loss in succession for the Suns , 17 1/2 behind in the Southern League East. Derek Thompson (4-7) surrendered four runs in five innings to absorb the defeat. Daylon Holt jacked No. 8 out and also doubled while James Loney, back after suffered a contusion of the knee , doubled and singled.

Brevard County 2, VERO BEACH 0
The Dodgers were held to a paltry four singles but kept their five-game lead in the Florida State East since second-place Palm Beach also lost. Clint Hosford (4-2) gave up two runs at the beginning, then blanked the Manatees for five.

COLUMBUS was deadlocked with Capital City 3-3 after nine when rain halted proceedings. The game will be resumed before the regular contest tonight.

Great Falls 9, OGDEN 4
A huge third inning in which Javier Garcia (1-2) was rocked for seven runs carried the White Sox past the Raptors. Ogden is now 9-13, six behind first-place Provo in the Pioneer League South second half but only one-half back of Idaho Falls in a bid for a playoff slot. Cory Dunlap pounded two doubles and a single, Cole Bruce homered (2) and singled and Travis Denker had a pair of singles.

Marlins 7, GCL DODGERS 3
Alvin Hayes pitched five innings in which he was touched for only one hit before the Marlins got to Kale Garrison (2-2) with a pair of two-run homers . . That decision left the two teams tied for second in the East Division, 1 1/2 behind the Mets. Jamie Hoffman was the only Dodger with a pair of hits.

PLAYER MOVES - In a chain reaction after the trade of outfielder Jereme Milons to the Diamondbacks, Matt Kemp was promoted to Vero Beach, Steve Sapp to Columbus and Anthony Raglani was activated with the Gulf Coast entry. Raglani, a fifth-round draft choice from George Washington University, had a bone in his hand surgically repaired just after signing . He debuted with a pinch single .
