Dodger Farm Report August 26th

Velocity can be the most overrated item in a pitcher's repertoire as Edwin Jackson was busy proving Wednesday night. Making his second rehab start for Las Vegas, the righthander was clocked in the upper 90's. Unfortunately his command was worse than that of an Athens traffic cop . The result- no hits but five walks and a wild pitch in the space of one and one-third innings, a performance that will no doubt keep him lingering in the minors for a bit longer.

On a 50-pitch limit, Jackson was done quickly as the result of his wildness but the 51's lingered on, only to ultimately fall to Fresno 9-8 with Tom Farmer (6-5) , the loser. While the pitching was shoddy, the hitting wasn't. Antonio Perez had a grand slam (No. 19), Tom Wilson sent his first out after joining the team plus a double and a reviving Joe Thurston hit his 9th along with a double. Jason Repko added two two-base knocks but all that wasn't enough as Vegas dropped 16 off the pace in the PCL South.

Elsewhere, while Vero Beach moved closer to a second half title, three oher Dodger pitching prospects had off evenings.

VERO BEACH 10-1, Brevard County 5-0. In the first, a makeup game of one washed out last week, the Dodgers rallied as Trey Dyson led the way with a triple, double and two singles. Scott Gillitzer homered (7). Casey Hoorelbeke (6-4) wasn't sharp, being bounced around for seven hits and five runs in seven innings but was the beneficiary of the assault.

Alvis Ojeda, just up from Columbus, checked the Manatees on three hits over five, Eric Stults (1-0)and Beau Dannemiller (save 8) each followed with scoreless innings as a bases-loaded walk to Delwyn Young provided the only run. Tony Abreau had two hits in both games. All this kept the Dodgers 5 1/2 ahead of Palm Beach, which also won twice.

COLUMBUS 14, Augusta 12. The Greenjackets had 20 hits.. So what? The Catfish punched out 21 to win this exhausting contest. Jonathan Figueroa was routed early, being assaulted for seven runs before leaving after one but on came the hitters led by Alejandro DeAza who was 5 -for-6 including three doubes, driving in four in the process. David Bagley had three hits including his first out of the park, Luis Castillo lined two doubles and a single and Jared Price, three singles. Keny Plaisance, just promoted from the Gulf Coast, went to the final three , allowing only one run to gain the victory. The Fish trail by 11 in the SAL South.

Billings 8, OGDEN 4. Justin Orenduff (2-3) was another with command problems, getting behind in the count to wind up being roughed up for five runs in 3.1 innings. Travis Denker went yard for the ninth time and Cory Dunlap doubled and singled twice. The Raptors lost ground to Idaho Falls in its bid to make the playoffs and are now 1 1/2 back for that slot.

Marlins 13, GCL DODGERS 0. The Dodgers were officially eliminated in the East Division. Were they ever as they put on their worst display of the season. Bidding for an unbeaten season, Alvin Hayes instead lost for the first time after three wins as he was routed for seven runs . Jim Peterson doubled and singled. The Dodgers are four out with three to play.

JACKSONVILLE did not play.
