Dodger Farm Report August 31st

When the Dodgers were making their major player moves at the end of July, it included not only catcher Paul LoDuca but his heir apparent in the minors, Koyie Hill. That particularly created a void for this time of year when the call-ups of those who can help in The Show always include an extra receiver. So, G.M. Paul DePodesta worked to fill that vacancy as well, getting Tom Wilson . And you know what ? He's acting like a player who is primed and ready.

Wilson has acquired big league experience as a back-up with the Blue Jays , gaining a reputation as an offensive-minded catcher along the way. That he's certainly been doing in the waning days of the season for Las Vegas, as he demonstrated again Monday night, slamming a home run and two singles in a 4-3 , 11-inning victory over Edmonton.

The drive out of the park was his fourth in the short time he's been with the 51's while the hit total brought his average to a lusty .424. It probably means that he's going to get his call to L.A. when the roster limits move from 25 to 40 tomorrow.

A couple of others who may get the nod to move up did their bit as well as Luis Garcia sent No. 30 out plus a triple in a 3-for-3 night and Chin-Feng Chen stroked two more hits. John Barnes added a double and single to the cause with T. J. Mathews picking up his first decision since being purchased from independent ball and Mike Venafro gaining his first save. Vegas is 13 out in the PCL South.

JACKSONVILLE 4, Greenville 2. Chad Billingsley made another strong start for the Suns , going six innings in which he gave up only four hits and two runs with only one of those earned. He didn't get the win, though, for that went to Franquelis Osoria (8-5) as the Suns rallied fror two in the eighth . Steve Schmoll pitched the ninth for his second save. Joel Guzman's bat provided the difference as he drove his seventh home run out plus a single. The Suns are still way, way back (17 games) in the Southern League East.

VERO BEACH 4, St. Lucie 2. Tonight could be the night for the Dodgers who need only one more victory to clinch the Florida State East second-half title. The Hoorelbeke brothers were strong in this one, Jesse jacking No. 13 out along with a double and Casey holding the Mets farm to two runs over six. Tony Abreau collected six hits, and Delwyn Young tripled and singled . Eric Stults (2-1) was the winner with (recently married ) Beau Dannemiller earning his seventh save.

OGDEN 3, Great Falls 2. Chris Westervelt ripped a winning home run in the bottm of the 11th , his 10th, to keep the Raptors two games behind Idaho Falls (which also won) in its try for the Pionner League South's final playoff slot. Top draft choice Scott Elbert made a strong start , being reached for only two hits in five innings. Carlos Alvarez (3-0) didn't allow a run over the final three to win. Travis Denker, Blake DeWitt and Justin Ruggiano all had a pair of hits.

COLUMBUS was not scheduled.
