Dodger Farm Report September 1st

The celebration on the field, at least, was rather subdued- some handshaking and back-slapping rather than a wild melee of piled bodies. Perhaps that was in respect of the fact that that there's still major business to be taken care of. Still, Vero Beach's 3-1 victory over St. Lucie Tuesday represented a major accomplishment - a team that had once dwelt in the depths of the Florida State League coming on to clinch the East Division's 2nd-half crown , piling up the league's best over all record.

Manager Scott Little's club made it official as two who are relative newcomers to the team joined with one who is still somwhat a novice in his role to stifle the Mets attack . Matt Merricks (2-2) , obtained from the Braves for Tom Martin, went to the first five to win, Justin Simmons, signed in July came on for two and Richard Bartlett closed. It was the seventh save for Bartlett, a Rule 5 draftee, who had assumed that role (which he shares with Beau Dannemiller) after Jumbo Diaz went out with arm problems.

Both Delwyn Young and Andy LaRoche had two hits to lead the attack for the Dodgers who are 6 1/2 ahead with just four games left in the regular season. They'll face first-half champ Daytona in a best-of-three set for the division title beginning Tuesday.

Elsewhere:

Edmonton 9, LAS VEGAS 8. Edwin Jackson was a lot better with the bat than he was on the mound in an 11-inning loss. Jackson smacked two home runs himself but was kicked around for six runs in four innings with five walks over that span doing a lot of damage. Luis Garcia homered (31) and doubled and Antonio Perez jacked a pair out (22) but all that wasn't enough when Matt Cepicky led off the 11th with an out -of the yard blast of his own off Tom Farmer (7-6).

JACKSONVILLE 2-4, Greenville 1-2. The Suns went to essentially second-line pitching for a pair of wins. Eric Hull (4-3) allowed only two hits over five innings in the first and Luis Gonzalez (1-3) followed Brian Steffek's first start in two years with two scoreless in the second . Augustin Montero picked up saves in both games to give him three on the season. Edwin Bellorin had a pair of hits in the opener while Joel Guzman was the big bopper in the second contest, sending a pair of shots out , giving him nine for the Suns who are 15 1/2 back in the Southern League East.

Idaho Falls 8, OGDEN 7. The Raptors took a bit hit in their chances for a Pioneer League South playoff spot as they now trail the winning Chukars by 3 1/2. Howar Zuleta , in his first game since coming up from the Gulf Coast League, was ripped asunder for three runs in just 1/3 of an inning to absorb the defeat. The Raptors did pound out 15 hits led by Blake DeWitt with a triple and single and Travis Denker , who doubled and knocked two singles.

COLUMBUS was rained out.

PLAYER MOVES As expected, catcher Tom Wilson 's contract was purchased by the Dodgers , who added him to the 40-man roster. Meanwhile, Las Vegas outfielder/ first baseman Brian Myrow was suspended for the rest of the season for unspecified reasons.
