Dodgers Lose nine, Gain One in Rule V Dratt

Los Angeles selected D. J. Houston, a right-handed pitcher, from the Astros in the major league portion of the annual Rule V draft. Houston was 12-5 with a 2.94 earned run average and 159 strikeouts in 159 innings for the Houston Triple-A team in New Orleans. L.A. lost three in the major league draft and six more in the minor league phase.

The Dodgers lost nine players in the major league part of the Rule V draft, including Marcos Carvajal, who was taken by the Brewers and it is rumored he will be sold or traded to Colorado; outfielder Shane Victorino who was taken by the Phillies and Matt Merricks, who was selected by the Rockies. Carvajal was 4-2, 1.88 for Columbus in the South Atlantic League and had 72 strikeouts in a like number of innings. He pitched briefly for Jacksonville and didn't give up a hit or a run in three innings; Victorino hit .235-3-20 for Las Vegas over 200 at-bats and was .327-16-43 for Jacksonville. Merricks was 2-2, 3.12 for Vero Beach.

Lopez was 5-3, 4.78 for Columbus; King hit .277-13-47 at Jacksonville; DeAza hit.255-4-45 at Columbus; Wayne, who converted to the pitching mound, was 0-0, 9.00 at Vero Beach and 5-3, 2.66 at Columbus.
