Dodgers lose Beltré, May Trade Green, Penny

Adrian Beltré signed with Seattle after the Dodgers couldn't match their bid and the rumor of a blockbuster trade that involved Randy Johnson going to the Yankees and Shawn Green, Brad Penny and Yhency Brazoban goint to Arizona upset the Dodger Nation. The planned trade would give L.A. Javier Vasquez and the Yankees #1 and #2 ranked minor league players, catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan.

The trade, coupled with the loss of Beltré, has infuriated Dodger fans as much as the May 14, 1998 bloodbath that sent Piazza and Todd Zeile to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson and Jim Eisenreich. Beltré OK'ed a five-year contract from the Mariners worth a reported $64 million. The Dodgers offered a sixth season plus an option year in 2011, but they couldn't match the average salary of Seattle's proposal.

The trade, concocked before the loss of Beltre, may be reconstituted or completely dropped by the Dodgers it is thought.
