Drafted in hockey by the Carolina Hurricanes, Hoffmann was persuaded to give up the ice game for baseball after he was discovered while playing American Legion ball. He proved to be the revelation of the GCL Dodger offense, leading the league in hits (70), total bases (105), triples (7), RBI (36) and runs scored (40), while hitting .310.

He has a long swing but gets to the ball and stays on it, driving four out of the spacious parks the league plays in with promise of more in his very strong frame. He's an aggressive player who battled back after a late-season slump dropped his average. He moves well and is quick on the bases, stealing 14. In the field, he has the arm to remain at third and his footwork improved although he has more work there. He might well be tried at a corner outfield spot.

His progress was such that he certainly should play at least at Ogden next season, if not skipping that league to advance to Columbus.
