Nane- CHIN-FENG CHEN
Residence- Tainan City, Taiwan
DOB- Oct. 27, 1977
04 Club(s)- Las Vegas (AAA); Los Angeles (National)
Once more Chen put up some strong numbers in the minors -- (.289-20-65), despite being off for over a month to play for his native Taiwan in the Olympics. Once more he was called up for brief appearances with the Dodgers but, as always, spent most of that time sitting.
He's not the wonderboy he seemed when he first broke in with San Bernadino in 1999 when he produced a .316-31-123 year but he has always had the kind of numbers that gain notice. He has good bat speed and a a level swing that generates pop. He's been a streaky hitter for the most part and often chases pitches out of the zone so his strikeout totals have been high.
It's in the field that he has problems. He's had shoulder problems so a sub-par arm chains him to left field. They tried him at first base in 2002 but he didn't fare well there so has gone back to full-time outfielding. Thus, it's his bat that will carry him.
He seems more than capable of being a power hitter in the big leagues; however, has been given litle chance in Los Angeles. This would seem to be a crucial year for him, one in which he either makes the team or moves on.
