Mike Megrew had been advancing quite nicely despite the fact that he's never had a smoking fast ball. Now, he'll have to overcome another problem for a sometimes balky elbow didn't bounce back at the end of last season, forcing an operation.

Megrew certainly has the size that indicated that down the line the fast ball would get to where it could be a formidable weapon but in the meantime he developed a changeup that he could (and did) throw at any time in the count.
Mixing his pitches successfully and hitting spots adroitly, he was a success this past season at Vero Beach (7-6, 3.41) despite the arm problems.

This followed two good years at Ogden (Pioneer ). Meanwhile he was nudging the fast ball up to reach 90, sitting comfortably at 88 and also featuring a big bending curve.

Because his operation occurred late in the season, it's doubtful that he can contribute in 2005. However, because he's learned a lot about working hitters rather than blowing the ball by them, his comeback from the surgery may be an easier path than the one some others follow.
