Dodger Prospect Hugo Pimentel

44th in a series as we count down among the top Dodger prospects.

Position- Starting Pitcher
Residence-LaRomana, D.R.
DOB- Dec. 14, 1985
04 Club- Columbus (low A)

This past spring Pimentel received a chance to pitch in one of the rare night games that minor leaguers get to play in spring training. Such contests are attended by all the major Dodger brass so on this occasion he demonstrated the pitches and the poise that caused them to push him beyond the pack into the Columbus rotation.

His experience was extremely limited -- just eight games in the Dominican Summer League where he was an unprepossessing 1-1, 4.09 but he had flashed an arm that had prompted his being brought to this country.

The normal route for such a young (just turned 18) pitcher would have been to remain in the extended spring camp, then be assigned to a rookie team. But after that showing, they decided otherwise.

The result? Pimentel; made the decision look wise for he went 10-8, 3.48 in the advanced competition including 102 strikeouts in 111 innings.

He does it with a fast ball that sits comfortably in the low 90's and should get even better. His breaking pitch is more of a slurve and is very effective and his change is coming along nicely.

Command is a problem for it sometimes deserts him but with his power stuff (he fanned 16 in one game) and added experience he could be formidable. He should start next season in high A.
