Joel Hanrahan slipped down the charts in 2004, no question about that. In a year that could well have seen him advance to the big leagues, he instead got behind in counts, had too many pitches stay up in the zone often to be driven to the great beyond. The result was a 7-7, 5.05 year.

But he hasn't fallen into the abyss for the thought is that he's demonstrated resilience before and could well bounce back again, learning from that painful experience. If he returns to what he was in 2003, he's on the cusp of making it up. Then, he was Southern League Pitcher of the Year with a 10-4, 2.43 record for Jacksonville, striking out 130 batters in 133 innings.

When he's on his game, he keeps the ball low, sinking a fast ball that reached 94 mph, a sharp slider and at times an effective change. A second-round draft pick in 20, he threw two-no hitters in 2002 at Vero Beach. He certainly would seem to have the pitches and the intelligence to climb out of the slump in 2005.
