Rain Scrubs Astro Game on St. Patrick's Day

Scheduled St. Patrick's Day celebrations were able to start early due to nearly 24 hours of continuous rain that cancelled the scheduled game with Houston, the Dodgers third washout of the season. Due to an open day March 18, players will get a two-day break although lefties Wilson Alvarez and Mike Venafro will pitch in a minor league game tomorrow.

Players were set to wear their green L.A. hats and special green bases were in place for the annual contest but Mother Nature ruled against it.

L.A. will next see action on Friday when they travel to Jupiter to joust with the Cardinals.

Manager Jim Tracy announced that Derek Lowe will open the season for the Dodgers in San Francisco on April 5 and that Jeff Weaver will be the starter for the home opener March 12.

History 101--On this date in 1946, the Dodgers faced their Montreal farm club at Daytona Beach in an exhibition game, marking the first time in the 20th century an integrated team saw action in organized baseball. Some 40 years later the field was renamed Jackie Robinson Park.

Players Optioned--The club cut down to 45 men by optioning infielders Willy Aybar and Brian Myrow, pitcher Franquelis Osoria and catcher Russell Martin. To show the importance of spring training statistics, Aybar was hitting .313, Martin .333, Myrow .200 and Osoria had a 1.80 ERA. The four players will be working out on the minor league side of Dodgertown tomorrow.
