Hochevar Did Not Enroll at Tennessee

The window of opportunity to sign the Dodgers top 2005 draft pick Luke Hochevar that had just about slammed shut was opened a bit more with the pitcher's decision not to attend fall semester classes at the University of Tennessee.

Friday was the deadline for students to enroll for the fall term, something Hochevar had indicated he would do if negotiations had failed. But the NCAA has ruled that he has enough credits to be eligible to pitch for the Vols in 2006 if he 's in school for the spring semester only. Thus, the two sides now have until January to get a deal done.

Under baseball rules, the moment any player attends classes at a four-year institution, the club holding negotiation rights loses them and the player goes into next year's draft.

"We're happy that Luke has decided not to attend school at this time, " said Logan White the Dodger director of amateur scouting. "Beyond that I have no comment."
