Vero Drops Opening Game of FSL Playoffs

Vero Beach lost 8-3 in the opening round of the Florida State League playoffs and have their backs to the wall tonight, needing to win the next two games to advance to the next round. Ogden lost their bid to win both halves of the Pioneer League when they dropped a 6-2 game to Orem.

JUPITER, FLORIDA-- Matt Kemp's first inning homer gave Vero Beach a 3-0 lead, but Palm Beach came back to beat the Dodgers 4-3 in the opening game of a 3-game playoff series. The Dodgers must now win Games 2 and 3 at home to advance in the post-season. The Dodgers took the early lead went Kemp hit a majestic home run to left-center. Jimmy Rohan and Blake DeWitt had each singled ahead of him with one out to set up the 3-run home run. However, Cardinals pitching settled down and allowed just four hits over his last eight innings. Two of the those hits came in the seventh. Anthony Raglani doubled to right-center with two outs. Rohan followed with a base hit to right and Raglani tried to score. However, Palm Beach right fielder Terry Evans threw him out at the plate of the final out of the inning. Rohan turned out to be the Dodgers final baserunner. Starter Brian Pilkington began by retiring the first nine Cardinals he faced. A walk in the fourth broke the string, and three singles pulled the Cardinals within one run. Pilkington rallied to strike out the next batter and coax a fly out to end the inning. Palm Beach took over the lead in the sixth on a double, a wild pitch, an intentional walk and a pair of infield hits. Game Two of the series is set for tonight at Holman Stadium. If the Dodgers win, the final game of the series will also be in Vero Beach Thursday night. Danny Muegge (8-2, 3.38) will start for the Dodgers Wednesday night at 7:00 PM at Holman Stadium.

OREM, Utah-- Ogden lost to the Orem Owlz who clinched the second half playoff berth in the Pioneer League South Division with the 6-2 victory. Adam Godwin and Jesus Soto singled to open the game and advanced on a passed ball. Russell Mitchell's infield singled scored the first run before Soto scored on a balk. That ended the Raptors offense for the evening. Orem scored two runs in the first, second and third innings, then held on for the win. Two triples and a double off of Cory Wade tied the game in the first. He gave up four more runs, three earned, in the next three innings and took the loss. Three relievers worked five scoreless innings to keep the game close. Godwin had three hits, including a double.
