Loney Moves to Regular Squad In Arizona

Dodgers first-base prospect James Loney has been promoted from the "taxi squad" to the regular roster for Phoenix of the Arizona Fall League, filling an opening created when Atlanta outfield prospect Josh Burris was shut down with a shoulder injury.

Loney was hitting .409 with three homers and seven runs batted in over six games. The promotion allows him to play regularly instead of only Wednesdays and Saturdays, the only days taxi squaders are allowed to play. Matt Kemp is bashing the ball at a .327 clip, while Andy LaRoche (.308) and Tony Abreu (.306) are not far behind. Newly-arrived Chris Hoorelbeke broke in with a bang, firing a shutout inning and earning a victory in his first appearance. Eric Hull has started three games and has a 2.08 ERA. Reliever Beau Dannemiller has had tough sledding, sporting an 11.74 earned run average over six appearances.

Loney is coming off his best minor-league season at Double-A Jacksonville, where he hit .284 with professional career highs of 11 home runs and 65 RBI.

Dodgers scouting director Logan White, who lives in the Phoenix area and has seen most of the Desert Dogs' games, said Loney has looked even more sound at the plate this fall and is doing a better job of hitting to all fields.

The taxi squad is a way for teams to send a seventh player to the AFL. White and player development director Terry Collins figured Loney was perfectly suited to the role.

"I told James at the beginning (the taxi squad) would be good for him because there might be a day when he gets to the big leagues where he'll be coming off the bench, and he might sit around for five or six days and then have to come in cold and hit," White said.
