Martin Chosen As Catcher For Team Canada

The year 2008 will probably be the last one in which baseball is a recognized sport but it is on tap for that year in Beijing and at least one Dodger has a chance to be there.

Russell Martin, who had a stellar season at Jacksonville, is the catcher for Team Canada which is competing in the first round qualifying event to be held in Phoenix, Nov. 15-19.Team USA is hosting the event with squads from Mexico, Nicaragua. Guatemala and Panama also slated to compete. In order to stage the event then. the Arizona Fall League will shut down early to allow the venues to be used.

Martin hit .311-9-51 for Jacksonville's Southern League champions as well as providing strong defense. Once again he's slated to be a member of the Dodger 40-man roster next spring.

Four teams from this competition will advance to the Western Hemisphere tournament to be held in Cuba sometime in 2006 with Canada having an excellent chance to be one of those four.

No player from the Dodger system was chosen for Team USA while the other countries have yet to announce their rosters. The Dodgers currently have players from Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama in their system so may be represented on other units as well.
